Wood. Tomato crate with blue paper label on side that reads "House Brand Grown and Packed by D.R. House, Everglades, Fla.) Net weight not less than 30 lbs. when packed". Tomatoes were an important crop in the southwest Everglades region. Grown here since the first white settlers arrived in the 19th century, they became big business in the early 20th century. In 1939, Ochopee was at the center of 2,000 acres of tomato fields, complete with barracks for workers, store, filling station, stables and packing houses. In 1929, J.B. Janes and E.C. Gaunt moved their tomato plants to the area. |
